Prince William gives Kate Princess Diana’s Engagement ring

Kate Middleton's engagement ring has spawned hundreds of high st lookalikes

Kate Middleton was given Princess Diana's engagement ring

Whatever you think of Prince William’s decision to pass on Princess Diana’s engagement ring to Kate Middleton, there’s no denying that the ring itself is an absolute beauty. The enormous oval deep-blue rock of a sapphire (18 carats, no less) is surrounded by 14 beautiful diamonds all set on a narrow gold band.  Prince Charles originally bought the ring from Garrard Jewellers of Mayfair. This is all a bit of a delightfully royal scandal because the ring wasn’t made bespoke for Diana, nor was it even unique. Rather it was on sale to the general public, so any old commoner like you or I could buy one! Whilst it cost 28,500 pounds when Prince Charles originally bought it, its estimated worth now is a rather royal 250,000 pounds; this is down not just to inflation, but its connection to the Princess.

Kate Middleton’s Engagement ring actually belonged to Prince Harry

Interestingly, Prince Harry had originally picked out the ring for himself from Diana’s belongings after she died. Rumour has it that William and Harry agreed that whoever got married first would get the ring for their royal bride. Which makes me think, could Prince Harry have been in on the engagement before William popped the question? Nice to think that the two royal brothers might have had a little secret tete-a-tete before William popped the question. Chelsey must be furious she missed out.

Chegals

I’m coining a new term for girls like me who rock the royal look for less – “a chegal” (pronounced chee-gal) – where cheap meets regal. We’re unashamed Copy-Kates who don’t have the cash to buy the real thing, so buy the next best lookalike from the high st.

Despite not being able to look more unlike Kate Middleton if I tried, I’ve been doing my best to imitate the Kate Middleton look for less for years.   The black suede knee high boots worked, the Liz Hurley white skinny jeans didn’t, that be for sure.

Anyway, not undeterred by the odd fashion disaster along the way, this week I’ve been a total chegal (see it’s a good word, isn’t it?) and have been exploring affordable high st copies of Kate Middleton’s engagement ring.

High St copies and lookalikes of the Royal Engagement Ring

Emitations.com created this copy of Kate's engagement ring

Emitations.com replica of Kate Middleton ring

First up is this number from Emitations.com with an enormous faux sapphire. Priced at $63.99 (reduced from $80), this copy is a great imitation of Kate Middleton’s engagement ring. Emitations.com is currently sold out of the rings, but there is a waiting list so it’s still possible to get one. The most obvious indication that this is a copy is that the band is slightly different – a v-shape rather than a straight band like the real thing. Nevertheless, the ring looks sparkly and certainly not cheap – I’d go as far to say that even Kate Middleton would be happy to wear it.

QVC’s tribute to Diana’s ring

Second in line to the throne is this perky little number from QVC, the shopping channel. Created by Kenneth Jay Lane and entitled the “Princess Simulated Sapphire ring” (doesn’t have much romance to it, does it?), this is on sale for $39.54 reduced from $55 on the US site. Also available in the UK on the QVC site.

Amazon have their own copy of Kate’s engagement ring. This replica is currently massively reduced, on sale for just 136 pounds 38 pence reduced from 350 quid (that’s 61% off! ). Americans should be able to purchase this from the US Amazon site too. I’m not sure if I’m completely convinced by this lookalike. It’s not that cheap and yet the setting looks really cheap. I’d pass this up for the H.Samuel one below.

H Samuel's lookalike sapphire ring

H. Samuel's lookalike is a dead ring-er for the real thing!

The UK’s,  H. Samuel have created this dazzling High st copy of Kate’s ring. At 129 pounds, it’s an investment piece rather than a throw away bit of costume jewelery – but with 9ct gold and diamond lookalike cubic zirconia, it’s a great replica of the real royal engagement ring. I’d go as far to say it’s a dead ring-er (ho, ho) for the real thing! Available now, it’s actually slightly more blingy than Kate’s ring because it has the lookalike diamonds in the wedding band as well as around the sapphire itself.

So there you go, now you can have a ring that’s fit for a Princess on a commoner’s budget! If you’re a chegal, why not check out how you can get Kate Middleton’s engagement dress for less?

Cheerio!
