The countdown is on – Kate Middleton and Prince William have set their wedding date for Friday April 29th 2011. Courtiers ready, Ladies-in-waiting ready, with just over five months to go – let the Royal Wedding planning begin!

Royalist or not, Britain is rejoicing with the news that PM David Cameron has confirmed April 29th will be a bank holiday for the nation.

For those of you who love Wills and Kate as much as I do, it’ll be the perfect excuse to get to know your neighbours with a retro street party. Why not dust off the Charles and Diana china especially for the occasion? My very own Lady in Waiting, Hazel,  uses her Charles and Di crockery all the time – looks great coupled in her 1950s styled kitchen along with carrot cake and earl gray tea. For those of you who aren’t so keen on the Royal Family, why not take advantage of the fact that all the shops are set to be empty?

With Easter, the Royal Wedding bank holiday and the first May bank holiday all running in close succession, Britain will actually only have three official working days between April 22 and May 2 2011. This also means that there will be three short working weeks in a row. Hurrah for the Royals, I say!

Cynics are reporting that the cost of the Royal Wedding bank holiday to the British economy is likely to be a whopping six billion quid. It’s just as well the Royal Family and the Middletons are paying for the wedding themselves! More on this later.

What they don’t consider is the huge benefit to the British economy from tourism, royal memorabilia and the additional shopping and drinking time the extra bank holiday will allow us.  And, as well as all that, with newspapers showing photographs each day of Kate Middleton in yet another gorgeous dress, retailers are going to make a fortune from us girls as we struggle to keep up.

Bring on April 29th and the Royal Wedding – I, for one, absolutely can’t wait!

With lots of love, the Lady in Waiting, Lucy Elliott.
